Palouse Falls – 15 January 2026

posted in: BLACK & WHITE, WATER | 0

When I first arrived at Palouse Falls on this cold January day, I could only hear the sound of the water falling over cliff into the pool below. The fog was thick and the visibility was very limited. From the walk along the cliff line, I could not see the river below or across the canyon to the opposite side, I could only hear the roar of the water. I was actually thinking the fog was going to add a more dramatic effect for the photos of the falls. Palouse Falls is a beautiful waterfall and photographs are taken daily, but I don’t often see photos of the falls obscured by fog. So I was intrigued by what I would actually find. After a while hanging out at the park I was getting concerned that my trip to Palouse Falls was for not since the fog was not lifting and the visibility not improving.  While strolling on the trails, I realized that while the fog was not dissipating, it was ebbing in areas and with patience I might be able to get some photos after all. I found a few vantage points and sat patiently waiting for the fog to lighten up, and it did for brief moments before filling in again and I was able to catch a few photos.

Black & white photos captured the scene best and in the most dramatic way. The landscape was bleak and colors were pale, often only appearing as tinted scales of gray under the muted light of the fog cover. My favorite image was from an overlook where a cliff face towers to the left of the falls and the fog obscures the landscape above.
